What Is the Current Condition of the Mugling–Kathmandu Road? New Track at Galchhaundi and Construction of the Benighat–Fishling Alternative Road
Dhading, October 22, 2026
The Prithvi Highway, a major road connecting Kathmandu with various districts across Nepal, has recently faced disruptions due to landslides, road subsidence, and river erosion along sections of the Mugling–Kathmandu route.
After the road collapsed due to erosion by the Trishuli River in the Galchhaundi area of Dhading, traffic was disrupted. A new track was constructed by cutting into the hillside, allowing vehicles to resume operations. Reports published on October 11 stated that the road had reopened.
Earlier, the Krishna Bhir section of Dhading also faced road subsidence caused by erosion from the Trishuli River, disrupting traffic. Vehicles were able to operate after a new track was constructed above the vulnerable section. However, temporary tracks alone may not provide a long-term solution, making alternative road construction increasingly important.
Construction of the Benighat–Fishling Alternative Road Accelerates
To reduce the risks associated with Krishna Bhir, work has been progressing on an alternative road connecting Benighat and Fishling via roads on the opposite side of the Trishuli River.
The plan involves connecting the bridges at Benighat and Fishling to establish an alternative route. Road widening, track improvements, and blacktopping are among the planned or ongoing works.
The main objective is to provide another route for vehicles when the Krishna Bhir section of the Prithvi Highway becomes impassable due to landslides or road subsidence.
According to previously published reports, some sections of the alternative road still required additional track construction, while other sections needed upgrading. Official confirmation is therefore necessary to establish whether the road is fully completed and suitable for all types of vehicles.
When Will the Alternative Road Be Completed?
Once completed, the Benighat–Fishling alternative road is expected to reduce dependence on the vulnerable Krishna Bhir section and provide another route when the main highway is blocked.
However, the latest construction progress, blacktopping status, and opening date have not been independently verified. It would therefore be premature to claim that the entire alternative route is ready for regular traffic.
Travelers Urged to Stay Cautious
Passengers and drivers traveling along the Mugling–Kathmandu route and other sections of the Prithvi Highway are advised to check the latest road conditions with the Department of Roads, the relevant road project office, or traffic police before starting their journeys.
